This is my first time reading Dianne Duvall and I assure you it will not be my last. I had a great time listening/reading to Darkness Dawns, the first book in the Immortal Guardian paranormal romantic suspense series. I heard so many great things about this series, I knew I had to try it and I got a copy of the audiobook through the audible romance package to do so. Darkness Dawns is filled with enough steamy romance and action to keep you entertained.

The book introduces readers to a group known as the Immortal Guardians who spend their time protecting innocent humans from vampires. What made these guardians special was despite being infected with the vampire virus, their unique DNA makeup they a spared them the madness that normal humans experience from the infection

I enjoyed the unique world and interesting characters the author created.  The sarcastic banter between the immortals and the humans who worked with them had me laughing whenever these moments occur.

The main characters Roland and Sarah were a treat. Sarah is a music professor. Because of her bouts, with insomnia, she sets out at dawn to prepare the soil for her garden. While she is busy turning the soil something moving at high speed crashed into her and knocks her to the ground. She believed it was a wild animal, but then on hearing the hunter’s conversation she realised it was not an animal. She took it upon herself to carry out a rescue, with, no form of backup other than her trusty shovel. I loved that scene.

She is smart, brave and strong. She definitely held her own.

Roland, a member of the Immortal Guardians is an anti-social 900-year-old immortal who prefers to work alone.  He has issues with trust having been dealt the sting of betrayal several times.  Compassionate but, deadly, he has proven to be a worthy adversary. I loved seeing him in action.

Someone wants him dead, which was evidenced by the several attacks made against him by an army of vampire minions. He has no idea why, but he along with his team members are determined to find out and put a stop to it. Besides this, readers are treated to another story, which had no bearing on what was happening with Roland. I am curious to learn more.

The romance is what you would expect in paranormal stories, fast paced. Despite the quick pacing, I enjoyed it. I believed they were a perfect fit.

Narrator
I found the narration by Kirsten Potter to be excellent.  She did a great job with the voices, especially the variety of accents. I enjoyed how she captured the emotions and expressions of the characters.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Darkness Dawns delivered an exciting, suspenseful, romantic story. Fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy will enjoy this offering. I have the second book Night Reins in my audible library.

Deal With the Devil, which tells the story of Jericho Forge and India Baptiste is the latest offering from Meghan March. It is the first book in the Forge Trilogy and for those who fear the dreaded cliff-hanger you may want to wait until all the books are released, but for readers who have no qualms about it, this book is not to be missed.

The story begins with Jericho showing up for a high stakes poker game he was not invited to. Here he comes face to face with India.
This game is important to her, so Jericho's appearance was a major cinch in her plans, but then he might just be the one person who can assist her.

Jericho is like no other man she has encountered. She knew from the moment she laid eyes on him this would be nothing like her usual poker game. Both are determined to win, bit there can be only one winner. Who will it be?

Jericho is ruthless and unapologetic. He doesn't give a damn as to what anyone thinks of him. If he wants something he will do his damnedest to get it and woe be on to the man or woman who tries to get in his way. Vengeance drives his actions, which makes him a deadly foe, but with India he never knew what hit him. She is like no other woman he has encountered. She challenges him and elicits feelings he never thought possible.

India is no walkover. I enjoyed getting to know her. Resilient, smart, feisty, confident, proud, bold, impulsive and beautiful describes her perfectly. Her life growing up made her the person she is today, but now she is caught between a rock and a hard place. She has no choice but to trust the one man who has the power to turn her world upside down.

The intense chemistry between Jericho and India had the power to make made my phone overheat. Yes the attraction between sizzled to the point of melting. It was fun watching them fight these intense feelings. When they finally gave into their feelings it was explosive.

Hooked from the first page. I had a hard time putting this book down. The drama, suspense, mystery, humor, chemistry and banter had me turning the pages. I needed to know how the story would unfold.

The end left me in a state of anticipation. Now i am on pins and needles waiting for the release of the second book Luck of the Devil.

Conclusion/Recommendation
If you love your heroes strong and protective and your heroines bold and sassy then you will love Jericho and India. Highly recommended.

Title : A Merciful Fate
Author: Kendra Elliot
Publisher: Montlake Romance

Genre: Romantic Suspense
“Sit.” Mercy sat on a stool that was too high for the makeshift table. She didn’t care. They could sit on the ground and she’d be happy with Truman. Currently the home had plywood subfloors and open framing, but part of Mercy loved the empty, bare look; it promised that something fabulous was coming.  Fabulous and practical.  Truman leaned over and poured red wine in the plastic cup by her paper plate. She sighed and buried her nose in her cup. The fragrance was deep and bold, with hints of plum and smoke.  “Italy,” she mumbled into the wine.  “What?” asked Truman.  “I want to visit Italy. How does a honeymoon in Italy sound?”  A grin filled his face, and the sensation of butterflies fluttered up her spine.  Or maybe it’s the wine.  She took a sip of her wine as she studied his face. So familiar and dear to her. A smile to stop traffic. Eyes that crinkled in happiness. Several scars that testified to his love of law enforcement. Her attraction to him was more than skin deep. She was in love with the person he was. He was a natural leader and easily commanded respect. His people turned to him, followed him, admired him. His natural sense of honor was a magnet for her.  No. It’s not the wine.  He gets me.  He understood how her mind worked, and they fit together like a couple of complicated puzzle pieces. She’d been painfully aware of her missing puzzle piece when he’d been taken away, chained by men planning to kill him, and then rescued thanks to Ollie. The two weeks when no one knew his fate had been the worst of her life. When he’d been returned to her, she’d known she couldn’t waste any more time.  He’d been of the same mind-set and had proposed.  “I’ll try Italy.” He dished spaghetti carbonara onto their plates.  “And what’s on your agenda for tomorrow?” he asked over the rim of his plastic cup. She perked up. “The bank confirmed the money bags are from the Gamble-Helmet Heist. And I have the go-ahead to visit Shane Gamble at the Two Rivers prison tomorrow.” “What are your thoughts on the remains?” Truman asked. “Did the medical examiner get to them yet?”  “Yes. They spent the afternoon removing the remains, and Dr. Lockhart was going to start an examination tonight. The woman never takes time off.”  “Same could be said for you.”  “Only when I’m deep in a case.”  “I guess this means your weekends are booked for a while?”  Mercy sighed. “I know. The two of us are supposed to be working on the interior of this place … We’ll get it done at some point. It’ll have to wait awhile.”  A grin filled his face.  “What?” she asked.  “You’re not the same person I met last fall. Back then, if the cabin had been in the half-completed state it is now, you’d be climbing the walls with anxiety because your safety net wasn’t perfect.”  “You’re right,” she agreed. “I had a similar thought earlier, but nearly all my supplies are still intact, so it’d be rough living but doable. I can temporarily live with that for now. Especially with this case to distract me.”  His lips twisted.  “Jealous?” she asked with a grin. “It’s an amazing case, isn’t it?”  “It is. Considering there have been no leads for decades, and the robbery is practically modern folklore. It’s like a buried treasure hunt, and Ollie found the first clue.”  “Is Ollie okay after his morning?” she asked with a small wince. She’d nearly forgotten the teen had made the grisly discovery.  “He’s okay. I spent some time with him and he was very quiet, but I could tell he was processing it. He’s dealt with death before.”  “He’s been through a lot,” sympathized Mercy.  They silently ate for a few moments until he glanced up and caught her staring at him. Longing shone in his eyes, an appetite and craving that had nothing to do with food, and she struggled to find her breath.  How does he do that to me?  “You know,” he said, his voice low and tempting, “this place hasn’t been christened yet.”   Mercy blinked. “People do that to homes?”   Patience filled his features. “That’s not what I meant.” His brown gaze held hers.  “Ohhh,” she breathed as heat flashed through her. “Dessert.” His smile was sinful, and energy pulsed between them.  She melted. “Yes. Dessert.”

Raised by preppers, survivalist and FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick has a deep-rooted need for a safe place. Her getaway in the Cascade Foothills is her secret. But when skeletal remains are unearthed—those of a murdered man linked to a notorious heist—Mercy realizes she isn’t the only one with something to hide. Thirty years ago, an armored-car robbery turned deadly. The mastermind was captured. Four conspirators vanished with a fortune. One of them, it appears, never made it out of the woods alive. For Mercy and her fiancé, Police Chief Truman Daly, their investigation opens old wounds in Eagle’s Nest that cut deeper than they imagined. Especially when a reckless tabloid reporter draws fresh blood. It’s clear to Mercy that somebody in this close-knit community is not who they seem to be. Some are still shattered by the heist. Some still have reason to be afraid. But which one will kill again and again to hide three decades of secrets? To land this case, it’s up to Mercy to unmask a familiar stranger before someone else dies.

BOOK REVIEW: BEAUTY IS THE BEAST by JENNIFER ZAMBONI @write_read_tea #UrbanFantasy

Title : Beauty is the Beast

Author: Jennifer Zamboni
Publisher: Jennifer Zamboni
Published : October 24, 2018
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 403
Format: ebook
Source: Author /Kindle Unlimited
Reading Challenges:  COYER Winter Purchase: Amazon

Beauty is the Beast did not deliver as I expected. There were interesting moments, but then there were times when I felt like giving upon this one. However, I persevered to the end and made a few interesting discoveries.

Based on the title, one may perceive that the story is a fairy tale retelling. This however was not the case. Beauty is the Beast tells the story of three friends who are cosmetologists and are the owners of a beauty salon and spa.  The thing that separates these three ladies from their counterparts was their other worldliness. Yes, they were non-humans. There is Gretchen a werewolf, Lacey Marie a vampire and Persephone the Greek goddess.

What I Liked.
World Building: I found the world the author created intriguing and definitely worth the visit. The concept that Hades, the god of the dead and husband of Persephone kept the supernatural world in line was intriguing and unique. In addition, there was the alpha changers for each of the species. They changed select humans into vampires or werewolves. Known as Faes and are considered the strongest beings in the supernatural world, with Hades and Persephone being the head.

The Characters.
I found the characters unique and intriguing, both the humans and non-humans. I enjoyed spending time with them and getting to know them, but none could top Gretchen, a 150-year-old dominant werewolf, but is not a member of a pack. Determination, strength, loyalty and a desire for justice were traits she embodied.
The secondary characters brought their own blend of originality to the story.

The Ending
Strangely enough, after the bombshell discovery at the end. I am curious to know, how Gretchen will handle the aftermath of the betrayal.  I do have questions and I am curious to know the answers.

What I did not Like.

The Story
The story lacked fluidity. It was all over the place and filled with unnecessary details, which made it difficult for me to get into the story. I put the book aside several times as a result.

The mystery element took a back seat throughout the story.  What I found strange in regards to this aspect of the story was the depth of the investigation, which took place to figure out the killer’s identity. In fact, there was only one attempt on Gretchen’s part to determine the identity. Then for the rest of the story the focus was on her development.  Then BAM! at the end the killer’s identity came to light without any warning. It came out of the blue as there was no build up to this moment.  The story focused on the development of the characters rather than the murders, which should have been of grave concern seeing that the victims were all hairdressers.

I received lessons in the proper cleaning of equipment used in the hairdressing. I also learnt of the different types of haircuts. I get that the setting is in a beauty salon, but I thought all of this information was unnecessary.  This contributed to the lengthiness and slow pacing of the story.

I am still trying to figure out the role of the circus in the story.

Conclusion/Recommendation
This has the potential to be a good story. I loved the concept but it needed better execution.

Beauty is the Beast (Beasts Among Us - Book 1)Gretchen is a 24-year-old-hairstylist with secrets: She likes to chase squirrels and howl at the moon. She’s also not really 24. When one of her coworkers turns up dead in the salon, she suspects that the murderer isn’t entirely human. When another stylist is murdered, and then another, she goes on the prowl. A circus with a secret side show catches her attention, as does her former pack, and a group of visiting vampires Her only outlet is her music, but that will only keep her wolf on a leash for so long with a killer on the loose.

Now I am at the end of the story I am at a bit of a loss as to what to write that would aptly portray my opinion of this book. This is my first experience with the author and the narrators so I did not know what to expect. Based on the rave reviews I came across for this title and the synopsis I expected an exciting read/listen. Sorry to say I am in the minority with regard to the rave reviews as the story failed to deliver what I expected. I guess this one was not for me.

Story
The story had potential, but I never connected with it. There were parts I found interesting, but these were overshadowed by the parts of the story that dragged.

Characters
The characters proved interesting, but I never connected with them. Initially, I found myself liking them, but then a particular revelation caused me to lose all developing connections. By the time, it came to light that the revelation was false it was too late to reestablish the lost connection.

One of the things I had difficulty wrapping my brain around was the relationship between the main characters, Luna and Parker. Parker had no contact with the outside world for 11 years because of time spent in a mental institution. Luna has been living under the evil thumb of her so-called guardian from she was eight years old. Now the moment they laid eyes on each other they knew they were in love. I had a hard time buying into that one even after events unfolded.

Magic and supernatural powers abound but it was not enough to make me enjoy this one. The cliffhanger ending helped to make the situation worse.

Narration.
The narration helped to make the story bearable, but it was not enough to get me excited. Four narrators were used in the story’s narration. I thought they did a good job in capturing the unique personalities of the characters through their voices.  The pacing and tones were good, and they captured each of the characters’ emotions well.

Conclusion/ Recommendation
I wanted to like this book, but it just did not work for me. Other readers Urban Fantasy may like this more than I did. I do not believe I will continue the series.

Black Diamond is the second book in the Wilds of Bayou series. I enjoyed the first book, but this is my favourite. I received an eArc from NetGalley, but never got the chance to review before now. When I discovered I could listen to the audio via Kindle Unlimited, I went the audiobook route.

The story began out on a chilling note. It gave me the chills, and of course, I had to continue, as I had to know how the story would unfold.

Jenna has been through so much and she bears the physical and emotional scars of her experiences. She has returned to fieldwork after the accident that left her with those scars. She gained a new partner, a new home.

A new drug has taken Terrebonne Parish by storm. This drug is addictive, and it makes users’ behavior violent and out of control. Jenna is invested in the investigation as someone close to her has been exposed to the drug.

Cole lives his life in recluse determined to escape his past.  His story will break your heart.  After hearing his story, I understood his reasons for choosing to live as a hermit.

There was literally no romance. This is one of biggest peeves when it come to this genre. It is classified as a romantic suspense but when you get between the pages, there is suspense served with a pinch of romance. The characters did not spend lots of time together, so there was no time for their romance to blossom. They were drawn to each other because they recognised they had emotional pain in common. I sensed the magnetic pull between them and I believed they had a connection.

The story moved at a pace. There was never a boring moment. At the eighty percent mark, the author stepped it up and at this point, the nail biting feeling came over me. I figured out the mystery from early in the story and as to the parties involved, this too came as no surprise. This however, did not diminish my enjoyment of the book. Instead, it piqued my curiosity as to what their next move would be.

Narration
I enjoyed the narration. The narrator’s voice was an easy listen. I loved her accents, and I felt she captured the voices of the characters well.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Overall, I enjoyed this installment. I will definitely read more from this author.    Fans of the genre will enjoy Black Diamond.

Title: Fragments of Ash
Author: Katy Regnery
Genre: Adult Contemporary
Romance
Publisher:  Katy Regnery
Release Date: October 1, 2018
Format: E-Arc
Pages: 300
Reading Challenges: COYER Winter

Fragments of Ash by Katy Regnery is the seventh book the Modern Fairytale series. The books need not be read in order as they can work as a standalone. This is Ashley and Julian’s story.

The story began with Ashley at her mom’s funeral. He mom died from a drug overdose at age 34
Ashley is 18. The world thought they were sisters.  Her grandparents blame her for her mother’s death, which of course is ridiculous. They have abandoned her to the mercy of her stepfather who has nefarious plans for her.

Ashley finds an opportunity to escape with the help of the priest from the school she attends. She links with her godfather who offered her sanctuary. Then she meets, Julian, who has sworn off women and wishes she would go away.

My heart went out to Ashley. She has been through a lot for a girl of eighteen. She witnesses her mother’s poor decisions involving drugs and prostitution. Exposed to the ugly side of the celebrity world, and when she thought things could not get any worse, she finds herself in the middle of the criminal underworld.  To add insult to injury now that her mother is dead, her stepfather wants her for himself. How sick is that?

I admired her strength in the face of adversity. She never allowed her situation to break her.
I loved how she dealt with Juliann She did not allow his irascible behavior to run her off. Instead, she showered him with kindness.

I could not believe how angry and jaded Julian was for someone so young. When I learnt of the experiences, which made him this way, things became clearer. Ashley managed break through the walls he erected with her innocence and inner beauty.

I loved that I got to see the story not only through Julian and Ashley’s eyes but also from Teagan’s perspective.  It made her appear human and allowed me to understand the reasons for her decisions and her state of mind upon until the moment she died.

I enjoyed the romance despite it moving at such a quick pace. I found it to be sweet and adorable. Julian proved to be a warm, caring and protective when he let his guard down and allowed Ashley to worm her way into his heart.

I have to admit I was on the edge of my seat dreading the moment Ashley’s stepfather would find her. (The man is pure evil.) Therefore, you can imagine my disappointment when this aspect of the story was wrapped up in a rush.  I believe the climax and the ending could have used more details.

Conclusion/ Recommendation
This was an entertaining read and one I would recommend to fans of fairy tale retellings and contemporary romance.

In the midst of the planning, Connor’s mom approaches Catalina requesting she locate the tiara she wants Nevada to wear at the wedding. She believes a member of her family is responsible for it being missing. What follows is a tale of intrigue as Catalina digs deep and uses her magic, something she has avoided for fear of its adverse effects on persons, but drastic times call for drastic measures. To save her sister’s wedding she will have to wield the big guns.

I enjoyed seeing Catalina in action. She can surely hold her own. She is definitely not someone to mess around with, as one particular wedding guest would discover.

I also enjoyed meeting Rogan’s mom. She is awesome. The way she embraced Nevada and her family was heartwarming.

Diamond Fire is a well-written story filled with fun moments that had me smiling from ear to ear. Betrayal, greed and hate was centre stage. I could not wait to know who wanted to sabotage the wedding. It was a delight watching Catalina uncover the treachery.

Conclusion/Recommendation
This is a great addition to the series. I eagerly await the next full-length novel, as I would love more information on Catalina. This is not one to miss.

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW: ALL THE RIGHT PLACES by JENNA SUTTON @JSuttonAuthor #ContemporaryRomance

Title: All The Right Places
Author(s):  Jenna Sutton
Narrator(s): Ava Lucas
Publisher: Jenna Sutton
Source: InkSlinger PR in exchange for a honest review
Format: Audio Book
Release Date: October 3, 2018
Length :  10 hrs 6 mins Reading Challenges: 2019 Audio Book Challenge, COYER Winter 2018
Purchase:  AudibleAmazon

I purchased the ebook as a freebie in August 2018 and I received the audiobook later in the year in exchange for an honest review.  I took advantage of Amazon’s whisper sync feature by listening/reading this title.

Narration: Ava Lucas narrated this title and I enjoyed her narration. She captured the voices of each character well, which made it easy to distinguish between whom spoke at any given time.

Characters:
Amelia is  designer, hired by Quinn’s sister to revamp the women’s department of Riley O’Brien and Co. Quinn believes she is there to design accessories. Amelia had a hard childhood. She grew up in an abusive home. Neglected by her mother and had no clue as to her father’s identity. She only had her best friend Ava Grace on whom she could rely.  It would have been good if the author had expanded on Amelia’s childhood.

Quinn is the opposite of Amelia in that he grew up in a privileged environment.  Currently, the CEO of the company as his father has taken ill. At times, he feels overwhelmed by the situation but he is determined to do what is right for the company. He faces many obstacles from persons within the company who are resistant to change.

The attraction between Quinn and Amelia is raw and passionate. Amelia tried fighting her attraction to Quinn knowing she was deceiving him, but he did not make it easy for her to keep her distance. He is determined to be with her.

I have to admit Amelia’s hot and cold actions proved frustrating. She wanted to be with Quinn, but her deception got in the way. It would make things easier if she came clean. When she decided to come clean, and he reacted negatively, she was disappointed. Seriously, did she really expect the man to say that is ok all is forgiven, please? SMH. These heroines can be so dimwitted at times.

Initially I was not a big fan if Quinn although I felt bad for him in regards to the deception perpetuated by his sister Teagan and by Amelia. I understood his sister‘s desire to take the company to the next level, but the steps she took to achieve this was downright horrible. As the story progressed, his sensitive side came to the forefront.
Now when these two finally got together, it was not at all, what I expected. Yes, there were some sexy moments, but I had a difficult time connecting with them as a couple. Their relationship was based on sex rather than on emotions.

Secondary Characters
I am intrigued by the supporting characters and would love to learn more about them. I got a little taste of Teagan’s personality and possible romantic involvement.  I would be interested to read her story as long as denim is not mentioned.

Story
I had a difficult time getting through the story. The story was built around manufacturing of denim while the romance took a back seat. I am not interested in how jeans are made; all I need to know is that they fit. As a result, I found myself skimming pages.

Conclusion/Recommendation
I wanted to like this one, but it was just an average read for me.  If love your romance steamy and do not mind graphic description of the bedroom scenes, then you like All the Right Places.

Only for You (Sugar Lake) - Melissa Foster
Sweetness abounds in the second installment of the Sugar Lake series, which was fitting given the name of the town in which the story took place. The story was not only sweet; it was heart-warming, funny and entertaining. I got my first glimpse of the main characters in the first book and could not wait to dive into their story and it sure was worth every waiting moment. Only for You tells the story of a single mom and the man who made her realise falling in love the second time around can be as good and exciting as the first.

Bridgette Dalton returned to Sweetwater to raise her five-year-old son after the death of her husband. Focused on raising her son and operating her flower shop, The Secret Garden, she had no time for romance. However, her hot and sexy neighbour has her thinking maybe pursuing a no strings relationship was not such a bad thing.

Bodhi Booker came to Sweetwater to renovate the house he purchased for his mom. As a covert operations specialist he never saw it fit to make a commitment of forever to a woman. He felt he had nothing to offer a woman. This was due to the dangers of his job. He never counted on meeting the beautiful young widow who would have him rethinking his position about relationships.

From the moment they met sparks flew, and their unexpected attraction had them both tied up in knots. They tried fighting their attraction; however, after weeks of struggling with their feelings for each other they became involved in a no strings relationship with no expectations of permanency. However, love is not an emotion one can dictate, as Bridgette and Bodhi will come to realise.

I found Bridgette to be a relatable character. I admired her independence, strength and determination. With Bridgette what you see is what you get. She was real, and she remained true to herself throughout the story. I understood her reluctance to get involved in a relationship. Having suffered pain from the loss of her husband, no one could fault her for not wanting to risk her heart again. Her son, Louie was her priority so relationships were a big no-no. She took her role as a mother serious and everything she did was done with Louie in mind.

Ms. Foster has created some amazing heroes, but Bodhi is my favourite by far. If it were possible for me to create the perfect man, Bodhi would be my template. He is hot, sexy, romantic and considerate. He is brooding, which made him even more appealing. He runs a charity for military heroes and their families. Seeing the way he treats both Bridgette and her son made my heart swoon. I can imagine the warm and fuzzy feelings Bridgette must have experience seeing this hot and sexy guy looking out not only for her but also for her son’s best interest. He is definitely a keeper. Did I mention he reads romance novels? Be still my heart.

I loved them as a couple. I became invested in their relationship and hoped they would work things out so they could be together forever instead of now and here.
Interaction between the characters was dramatic, entertaining and heart-warming. I loved all the characters but the one who owned a piece of my heart was Louie. Sweet, adorable and innocent in his mannerisms, he will worm his way into your heart.

I enjoyed this story, but I had issues. The issue I had relates Bodhi’s career, the mission he went on and the aftermath of said mission. The fact that his career played heavily in his decision to avoid long-term relationships, I expected it to be featured more in the plot. Instead it was glossed over. Furthermore, the problems arising from his career, which proved a hindrance was resolved quickly and easily. Regarding the mission, I was hoping for more details, especially as it relates to his final decision.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Fans of sweet, sexy and emotional romance stories with a sensitive and caring hero will enjoy Only For You.
Power Struggle (Detective Madison Knight series Book 8) - Carolyn Arnold
I had the pleasure of meeting Detective Madison Knight when I read In the Line of Duty book #7 in the Madison Knight series. I admired her for tough as nails demeanor, her tenacity and her dedication in doing her job. I also saw the lengths she would go through to protect those she loved. I related to her on so many levels and so I could not wait to dive into the latest installment featuring this no- nonsense detective. I was not disappointed. All the traits I came to love was on display once again in this installment.

The story began with Madison at the murder scene of the man who had murdered her grandfather. This is the first time she feels no empathy for a victim, but as a professional, she would do her best to find out who was responsible. The scene mimics another murder, committed by the Russian Mafia’s top assassin, the man responsible for her current nightmares. Still reeling from the recent loss of a friend and colleague, the thought that the cause of her nightmares may be back was not appreciated. Therefore, when the receipt of a threatening letter revealed that her speculations were a reality she faced the knowledge that her life and those of her loved ones was at stake.

Power Struggle is more than a story about a detective trying to solve a case. It demonstrated the emotional upheavals officers of the law face while trying to carry out their duties. Not only did Madison had to deal with a psychopath determined to kill her she had to deal with a mother who did not approve of her career choice and who blamed her for the danger facing their family. In addition, she also had to deal with the emotional challenges of being in a relationship with a fellow cop.

Tensions and fears were high and the character’s emotions leapt off the pages. I understood Madison’s need to protect those she loved, no matter the cost. She acted reckless on occasions, but I could not fault her. One never knows how they would react to danger until they are facing it. Although I did not start the series from the beginning. I can see based on my limited knowledge that Madison has come a long way as it relates to her personal relationships.

Knowledge of the villain’s identity from the outset did not make me enjoy the story any less. What made intriguing was waiting to see what he had planned for Madison. I curious to know how his plans for Madison tied in with his current spate of murders. Was he working for the mafia or has he gone rogue? The suspense laid in the fact that Madison had no clue as to the villain’s next move. Waiting to see what his next move would be, kept me on edge for most the story.

The author’s impeccable writing style had me glued to the pages. Her attention to details and the manner in which she presented the story made it easy for me to connect with every aspect of the story. She pulled me and kept me entertained to the end.

Conclusion/Recommendation.
Overall, this was a good story and one I recommend for fans of police procedurals.
Brake Failure - Alison Brodie
I have not laughed this much while reading a novel in a while. You know the kind that makes you feel you are about to pee yourself? Oh my, Brake Failure by Alison Brodie had me in a laughing frenzy, and by the end, I was all smiles.

The story began with a law enforcement officer suffering from a gunshot wound and the last name on is lips before he lost consciousness was Ruby. I was curious to know why her name would be on the wounded officer’s lips. Was she the one who shot him? The story rewinds sixteen weeks earlier providing me with the opportunity of meeting Ruby and getting the answers to the questions on my mind.

Ruby, a hypochondriac, is originally from England. She grew up living in the shadow of her stepsister. Everything with her was a competition, which led to their relationship being less than sisterly. As a result, Ruby felt like an outsider and saw herself as the one to least likely to succeed. At least according to her stepsister. She dreams of one day having the confidence her stepsister exudes and living her life. The opportunity for her to achieve this arose when her husband’s job would require him to move to Paris. Now she would have the life her stepsister dreamed of having. However, where Ruby is concerned things have a tendency not to go as planned. Instead of moving to Paris, she ended up relocating to Kansas.

I enjoyed tagging along with Ruby on her journey as she learns to adapt to life in Kansas. She appears to be making inroads. Slowly she transformed from a woman who had no confidence to one who was confident in her own skin. I saw a different side to her. She was funny and sassy. She takes on new challenges, which sees her leaving her comfort zone and embracing her inner vixen. She became a woman her husband could not relate to, and one whom men found attractive. She became sociable and made friends for the first time in her life. Her interactions with whom she came in contact in her new surroundings was delightful and fun. I especially enjoyed her interaction with Hank, a police officer/bull rider. Even though I may not have agreed with all her actions, I loved her. I could not wait to see the effect the choices she made would have in the end.

The story featured an eclectic mix of characters, which made it rich and vibrant. The characters were relatable and well developed and I enjoyed meeting them all. My least favourite of which was Claire, Ruby’s stepsister. I honestly do not know how Ruby survived her all those years.

The story, which moved between the past and the present, is set in the time leading up to Y2K. There is romance, but it was not the focus of the story. This is not a story I can go into detail without introducing spoilers. All I will say is this; it is funny, engaging, well written and fast paced.

Conclusion/Recommendation

If you are in the mood for a life changing adventure that will keep you laughing as you flip the pages, then Brake Failure is the book for you.
Holding the Other - Lyssa Layne

I received this book as part of my October Blind Date with a book.  When I read the blurb, I thought a love triangle would be at the centre of the story. Thankfully, this was not the case.

What the story is about.

Holding the Other tells the story of King of Country Music Lee Maverick and Kyle Kelly aka KK. Lee Maverick was on the top of the world as his career had taken off and he was fan favourite of country music lovers.  When his wife and fellow country music singer Miranda Wallen asked for a divorce after ten years together, he saw all he achieved shattering before his eyes. It did not matter it was something they both wanted as theirs was purely a marriage of convenience.  His biggest fear was his career tanking now that Miranda was no longer a part of his life.

KK dreams of becoming the next Reba McIntyre. However aster several disappointments, which included a broken heart she gave up on her dreams. However, thanks to her meddling best friend she finds herself on tour with the King of Country music. Sparks ignited and after days of fighting their feelings, they decided to explore the attraction between them, but then Miranda returned.

The Story

You see why I thought this would be a love triangle.  I was preparing myself for boatloads of drama, but it never came. The story which, was told in dual first person POVs on a whole, was good, but my favourite part was the epilogue. It was sweet and emotional. It made me smile and just gave me an all-round happy feeling. I enjoyed the writing, and I loved that it was not overly dramatic. The story depicted that one’s success usually follows their greatest disappointment.

The Characters
For most of the story, I had difficulty connecting with Kyle Kelly. I did not know who she was as a person and why she acted the way; she did. At around 45% of the story, I discovered she had a difficult life growing up. A mother who was a junkie and a dad who shut her out of his life after her mom passed, but I still could not connect with her. It was not until around the 80% mark when I began to get a feel for her.  Even though I never had her experience, I connected with her at that point and understood the reasoning behind her actions. I liked that she finally got a chance to fulfil her dreams after so many disappointments.
There was a particular event in her life that the author failed to develop. We all knew a guitarist broke her heart, but no information was provided in relation to this thread.

Maverick was a mystery from start to finish. Due to lack of information about him before his current life I had difficulty establishing a connection with him.  Furthermore, I found him to be a weak character.  He relied heavily on his ex-wife to boost his career and now she is gone he became a shell of his former self. It is clear he has the talent, but he lacked the confidence needed to shine on his own.  He felt that no one could replace Miranda until KK.
A hint was given as it relates to his childhood, bit it was not elaborated on, which was disappointing.

Supporting Characters
I was prepared to dislike Miranda, but she surprised me. She proved to be a nice person.  Lee’s manager on the other hand was up to no good. I figured he was up to something, but it took me awhile to figure out his end game.

The Romance
Unfortunately, I did not feel the chemistry between the characters.  I had a hard time buying into Lee’s feelings for KK. First, he did not want her on the tour, but when he saw how great a singer, she was and how well she gelled with lead guitarist for the band that fronted for him, he became interested. In no time, they became friends and then we see them moving from friendship to lovers. I believe he was using her to replace his ex-wife.

Conclusion

Did I enjoy this story? It was ok, but it was not a favourite.

Chasing Christmas Eve - Jill Shalvis

I have followed the Heartbreaker Bay series from the beginning.  From that moment I became invested in the lives of the characters featured and was eager for each of them to get their happily ever after. When I discovered this would be Spence’s story I was eager to dive into this one. Having been fascinated by Spence from the previous books and given my experience with the previous books I had high expectations for Chasing Christmas Eve.

What the story is about.

Imagine taking an unplanned trip to a city, you never intended to visit, but because of the weather, it proved to be the safest choice. All this was done to escape the stress of your personal and professional life. In the process the one thing you never expected occurred, you found your soul mate and discovered long-lasting and meaningful friendships.

Well Colbie Albright could tell you all about such an experience. She ended up in San Francisco, because she was fatigued, overwhelmed with family issues and dealing with writer’s block.   Meeting geeky and sexy Spencer Baldwin and falling in love was not on her agenda, but fate had different plans.

The last thing on Spencer Baldwin’s mind is being involved in a relationship not that he has had any luck in that department. Besides his latest project consumed all his waking moments.  Therefore, when he came face to face with the beautiful and mysterious Colbie Albright he was taken aback by his reaction to her.  Getting involved with her would not be a wise move as she is only in the city for two weeks, but the heart want what the heart wants.

Will he be able to let her go at the end of the two weeks or will he be able to convince her that what they share is not worth two weeks but a lifetime?

I remember the first time I read a book written by Jill Shalvis. Her writing sucked me in and warmed my heart. She creates relatable characters served up with a side of fun and Chasing Christmas Eve was no different.

This was a fun read, and it had everything I expected. Wonderful characters, humour, heat and friendships. The pacing was perfect and the drama low-keyed.  Never once did I experience a dull moment.  There was surprising and interesting development.  It had to do with Eddie, the homeless guy who Spence is always looking to assist.  It was a shocking but pleasant surprise.

I fell in love with Spence when I met him in the previous instalments.  However, I was disappointed with his portrayal in this installment.  Yes, he is brilliant, sexy, caring, and humble but I did not like how he allowed his friends to dictate his personal life. I understood the need to want to protect a friend, but he is a big man who can make his own decisions.  Elle was the one I had the issue with in this area.  She need to chill.  I enjoyed seeing taking a break from work and having fun.

Colbie cares for her family even though they are the source of her current situation. They are everything to her.   She is delightful and I enjoyed peeling away the layers of her character.  I loved how she blended in with Spencer’s friends.

I loved them as a couple. Their chemistry, which was evident from their initial meeting, was off the charts.  Their initialmeeting took place under unfortunate but funny circumstances. They had so much in common, which made them a perfect pair. They both feared commitment when it came to relationships. She was afraid of opening up her heart, while Spence feared he would break it, as he believed he was no good at relationships. However, where Spence was willing to take a chance, Colbie was more interested in running.  Watching, as they overcome these issues and taking a chance on love was delightful and heart-warming. I enjoyed their interaction with each other, which was fun and filled with heat.

Conclusion/Recommendation

Chasing Christmas Eve is an entertaining, witty and heart-warming story that had me smiling from ear to ear.  This is a great addition to the series and I am eager to see what next Jill Shalvis has in store for the gang of Heartbreaker Bay.

Secrets Hidden In The Glass: A Carter Island Novel - Cate Beauman

It takes one simple occurrence to uncover a deeply buried secret from the past.

I enjoyed the author’s Bodyguards of LA County series. When I discovered she would be releasing a new book with a different series, I was excited to get my hands on a copy.

What the story is about.

Secrets Hidden in the Glass is the story of Callie Davis and Nate Carter.  Callie is a renowned Stained-Glass artist who is facing a slump in her artistic talents. To combat the pressures and the stress, which contributed to her slump she escaped to Carter Island where she hopes to get peace, rest and her creative juices flowing again.  However, her plans never included meeting the hot and sexy sheriff of Carter Island, a meeting that would change her life in ways she never expected.

Sheriff Nate Carter was looking forward to the quiet and peaceful days, which usually accompany the autumn season.  Now that summer was over and the tourists have left the island, life could not get any better. However, the arrival of the mysterious and beautiful Callie Davis would put a kink in his plan. Shrouded by mystery, her presence unknown to them would wake up deadly and deeply buried secrets, which would place them in the cross-hairs of a killer.

What I Liked

The beginning of the story, which set the tone for the rest of the book, was intriguing. It peaked my curiosity, making me eager to discover the identity of the child abandonned twenty-two years ago and her connection to Callie Davis.  However, after sometime the story slowed down as the story focused on the life Callie is establishing with Nate.  For a moment I found my interest waning and I was tempted to give up on the story, but I am glad I stuck it out. The story heated up, when Callie made a discovery, which would set her on a path to discovering her true identity.  However, the fallout from this new development would turn her life upside down. Hounded by the media and the emergence of crackpots would prove more stressful than the very thing she came to the island to escape.

There were a few tense moments as Nate tries to uncover the secrets from Callie’s past. Some parts of the story was predictable, but there were areas where the author had me guessing the identity of the persons responsible for the tragedy in Callie’s past.

Nate proved to be a caring, funny, protective, determined and a loyal hero. The way he stood by Callie was endearing and inspiring. His determination to help her discover the buried secrets of her life was a testament to how much he cared about her.

Kind, warm and brave are the words I would use to describe the heroine.  However, sometimes I was turned off by her indecisiveness as it relates to the investigation. I recognised her propensity to cry when events from her past and present appeared overwhelming has a sign of anxiety, which was a product of the events from her past.

Together they made the perfect couple. Their relationship, which I found inspiring was built on two important ingredients love and trust.  It was these ingredients, which helped them survive the chaos, which surfaced because of Callie’s discovery. Callie found her home in Nate's loving arms and Nate discovered what it meant to love and be loved unconditionally.

I enjoyed reading about the secondary characters, both the good and bad ones. I was especially intrigued by Brad and Molly. I would love to know their story.

What I did not like.

The problem I had with this book had more to do with its length and not the story.  It was quite a lengthy story at 599 pages. Now I rarely have problems with stories that long, but when there a lot of details that does not add value and takes away from the important aspects of the story then that is when I have an issue.  This was the main thing that contributed to the slow pace of Secrets Hidden in the Glass. I skipped pages just so I could get to the important details.

Conclusion/Recommendation

Overall, Secrets Hidden the Glass was an intriguing and interesting read and one I would recommend to readers who love romance and mystery and do not mind stories filled will many details.

Holiday Wishes - Jill Shalvis

What the Story is about.
What would you do if you got the chance to right a wrong from your past?

In this installment we are introduced to Lotti Hartford a blast from Sean’s past. Lotti is in charge of the Bed and Breakfast where Pru and Finn’s bachelor/bachelorette is being hosted.

Sean, Finn’s brother, is in charge of the planning and to everyone’s amazement; he has done an excellent job. However, the one thing he had not planned for was his reunion with the girl whose heart he broke when he was sixteen years old.

Will he able to convince her he has changed and can she trust him not to break her heart once again?

Holiday Wishes by Jill Shalvis is book #4.5 in the Heartbreaker Bay series. Like the other books in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. However, if you want to get the full benefit of this fun and adorable series, I would recommend you start at the beginning.

Holiday Wishes features one of my favourite tropes, a second chance romance. Combined with my favourite holiday and a weekend wedding and I knew I would be in for a treat.

The Story
A short and sweet Christmas read that allowed me to hang out with the Heartbreaker gang while enjoying the development of the romance between the protagonists.  A well-written story with relateable characters and steady pacing made this a worthwhile read.

The Characters
Sean is a character with whom I am familiar. When I met him in the first book in the series, I found him to be immature and irresponsible. However, in this installment he demonstrated that he was not the irresponsible and immature young man persons perceived him to be. I loved this side of him.

I could not fault Lotti for her initial reaction to seeing Sean again after all these years. It could not have been easy for her to face the one person who had the power to break her heart into tiny pieces.  However, in spite of her fears the one thing she could not deny was the explosive attraction between them, which was as strong as ever.

It was a treat watching them navigate their un-resolved feelings and off the chart chemistry. I loved them together, and I silently hoped that they would get it right this time around.

Conclusion and Recommendation
Fans of the series will enjoy this Christmas themed novella. If you have not started the series, then I recommend that you do so as soon as you can as you are missing out on some fun and awesome stories.  As for me, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.

Another hit from one of my favourite authors and a great addition to the Heartbreaker Bay series.1
